Opportunities for Trust and Foundation Support

Sadler’s Wells works closely with both British and international foundations to provide funding for our core activities. We are indebted to our trust and foundation supporters without whose generosity many important projects would not have been possible. Outlined below are a few examples of specific areas that trusts and foundations can support at Sadler’s Wells. We also welcome general operating support to help fund our most critical needs.

Connect- education & outreach

•    Sadler’s Wells theatre has now refocused the education and access programme to increase access for as many people as possible to Sadler’s Wells’ unique resource - an opportunity to engage and work directly with the top international dance companies from around the world. The Connect audience includes children, families, students, teachers, adults, and community groups with various levels of interest and knowledge about dance. The programme is called ‘Connect’ to reflect its aim to communicate with the widest constituency of people in different ways.

•    The Connect Project is the only large-scale, theatre-based outreach resource for Islington and the surrounding areas.  It also provides a unique opportunity for people of all ages and abilities London-wide to discover and explore their creative talents. Over 9,000 people of all ages benefit from the programme each year.

Connect has established projects that have been piloted successfully and are now a regular part of the programme.   However, the Connect programme does not stand still – rather its aim is to continue to develop new and imaginative ways of working with a range of young people, dancers, teachers, choreographers, dance companies and our audience.

Research & Development

Central to our core vision is the plan for Sadler’s Wells to be the hub for the creation of new dance work- an environment for the exploration of new ideas in the production of dance theatre.

Case Study
At the end of 2005, we announced a major creative initiative supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. The Jerwood Studio has been designed to develop creative opportunities for dancers and choreographers to experiment and take risks. With an emphasis on collaboration with other artforms, including visual arts, theatre and music, the Studio has been set up to allow emerging and established artists the rare freedom to explore ideas with collaborators.

The two main strands of activity are Cross Art Form Collaborations and a Big Intensive. The latter  encourages artists, who may already be working on large-scale work, to extend the range of those they work with. The Big Intensive, held in December 2006, encouraged a number of dance artists to work on the bigger scale, with a series of workshops, masterclasses and discussions with accomplished artists both within choreography but also from other disciplines.

New Commissions

To complement the work , Sadler’s Wells has created a commissioning fund for new works. Works from the Sadler’s Wells stable, such as Push by Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant, have gone onto great international acclaim, and have established Sadler’s Wells as a major producer of bold, innovative modern dance.

Case Study
September 2007 sees the unveiling of a major new company- Morphoses, The Christopher Wheeldon company. Supported by The Deborah Loeb Brice Foundation, Morphoses was founded this year by Christopher Wheeldon with the fundamental goal of revitalising contemporary classical ballet by marrying dance, music, visual arts and design. Morphoses will be an Associate Company at Sadler’s Wells,

Alternatively, Sadler’s Wells benefits greatly from unrestricted support of its education programmes, which allows us to allocate funding toward those educational initiatives most in need of private support during a particular fiscal year.
