Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Portraits

Since 1683 Sadler’s Wells has been a site of creative expression. Six theatres bearing the Sadler’s Wells name have been located on the historic Rosebery Avenue site. October 2013 marks today’s Sadler’s Wells theatre’s 15th anniversary since it was last rebuilt in 1998 to better suit the needs of a national dance house.

Sadler’s Wells’ Associate Artists’ Portraits is a visual arts project that celebrates both the 15th anniversary of today’s theatre and the crucial role that the Associate Artists have played in the theatre’s success. The Associate Artists represent some of today’s leading choreographers, dancers, lighting designers, musicians and composers. Between them, their dedication and contribution to the art form help to keep dance pushing at its creative boundaries and engaging audiences worldwide.

As Alastair Spalding CBE, Artistic Director and Chief Executive at Sadler’s Wells explains, “For me it is incredibly important that Sadler’s Wells has artists working and creating new work in it. It changes the feel of the place. The first Associates were appointed in 2005 and coincidently, on our 15th anniversary, there are 15 Associate Artists so it seemed the perfect way to celebrate whilst also marking the appointment of our 16th Associate Artist.”

Each Associate was invited to work with a photographer of their choice and choose their own composition. The portraits will be on public display in the theatre’s foyer until April 2014 offering a deeper insight into the people that help shape bring the theatre and its stages to life.

To accompany the exhibition, we asked each of our Associates a few short questions about their portraits and how they came to chose their photographer and the composition. To read the short interviews, please click on the Associates’ names to the left.
