Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Sadler’s Wells with two programmes that showcase the extraordinary artistry of a company that has changed the face of American dance over the course of more than half a century.
- "It’s beautiful and mesmerising, and when I run into Carlos Acosta in the interval, he’s as exhilarated as I am"
- THE OBSERVER (Sep 2010)
- "For glamour and gusto these dancers can’t be beat"
- INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY (Sep 2010)
Programme One includes the gripping solo In/Side, plus the elegant Dancing Spirit, a piece that fuses movement from Brazil, Cuba and the USA. Suite Otis is a playful battle of the sexes set to some of Otis Redding’s best-loved songs, while Robert Battle’s The Hunt is an exhilaratingly athletic tour-de-force for six men.
Highlights of Programme Two include the world premiere of Anointed, set to a soundtrack by Moby, from acclaimed choreographer Christopher Huggins plus Artistic Director Judith Jamison’s 1993 Emmy award-winning production Hymn, a tribute to company founder Alvin Ailey.
Both programmes feature the classic Revelations, the most seen modern dance work in the world, choreographed by Ailey and first performed in 1960. A piece that celebrates and pays tribute to American dance music and history; it explores a journey from deepest grief to unbound joy and continues to inspire audiences whenever it is performed.
