Following the success of Jonathan Dove's Flight in 2008, British Youth Opera presents a new programme of intriguing and little performed operas in association with its regular orchestra Southbank Sinfonia.

A double bill of Rossini comedies, Il Signor Bruschino and La Scala di Seta (The Silken Ladder) shows the composer in his most inventive and sparkling form. A rich gallery of characters lead the audience through a double helping of cunning plans, farcical misunderstandings, mistaken identities and inevitable happy endings.

Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress charts the dissolute career and eventual downfall of Tom Rakewell in a series of richly imaginative scenes. Igor Stravinsky's music, inspired by baroque and classical styles, is characterised by the beauty of its vocal writing which takes us on a journey through fantasy, magic and the supernatural as it examines the plight of the human condition.
