Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan — White

Archived Show

UK PREMIERE

Directed by internationally renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan was the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. The company are known for transforming ancient aesthetics into thrillingly original performances that draw on diverse disciplines; from chi kung and meditation to ballet and internal martial arts. On their last visit to Sadler’s Wells in 2008, critics declared their work, Moon Water, “hypnotic” (The Guardian) and “a crash course in how to be stunning with the simplest of means” (The Independent).

White is divided into three distinct parts - each part presenting a different type of ‘white’. Set to music by Japanese composer Atsuhiko Gondai, The Bowed Piano Ensemble founder Stephen Scott and percussionist composer Alex Cline, light and shadow is used to spectacular effect as over 20 performers are transformed into moving silhouettes.

A visually captivating work, White plays with audiences’ perceptions of light and presents the body in its purest, most beautiful form.
