Royal Academy of Dance presents — Genée International Ballet Competition 2010
The RAD's flagship event returns to London for the first time in five years...be part of its homecoming!
The Genée International Ballet Competition is one of the leading competitive platforms for ballet. Named after the Academy's founder, Dame Adeline Genée, it brings together the finest young dancers from around the world, providing a unique opportunity to work with renowned choreographers, perform on international stages and launch professional careers.
Competitors perform three solos: a 19th century classical repertoire variation; a 20th century variation (Frederick Ashton or Kenneth MacMillan); and the world premieres of two specially commissioned variations (male & female) for the 2010 competition.
The 2010 Commissioned Choreographer is Liam Scarlett - one of the most exciting and promising young British choreographers and at 23 he is the youngest choreographer ever to be nominated for a Best Classical Choreography award at the National Dance Awards. His first work for The Royal Ballet on the main stage at the Royal Opera House premieres on 5 May 2010.
"I am delighted that the young dancers entering this year's Genée International Ballet Competition will have the opportunity to work with Liam. They will gain invaluable experience from working with such a talented dance maker."
Dame Monica Mason DBE
They compete in front of an international judging panel for coveted gold, silver and bronze medals as well as cash prizes to further their training or careers.
Alumni include The Royal Ballet's Principal dancers Leanne Benjamin, Lauren Cuthbertson and Steven McRae. Lauren & Steven are the 2010 Genée International Ballet Competition Patrons.
