Albert Herring Tue 4 & Fri 7
Peter Hall’s marvellous staging of Britten’s Albert Herring is a Glyndebourne classic. The combination of wit, mockery and tenderness make this one of Britten's most admired works. Unable to find a virtuous girl for the office of May Queen, a small Suffolk town instead elects the only youth they can find of unquestionable chastity - Albert Herring. Macbeth Wed 5 & Sat 8
Macbeth is recognised as one of the most consistently inventive and boldest of Verdi’s operas. Richard Jones’s imaginative new production draws on a range of contemporary imagery to add a new dimension to Verdi’s first Shakespeare opera. The setting is a militarised, modern-day Scotland, where the witches emerge from caravans to boil their brew on an old gas stove. Lady Macbeth (a Hillary Clinton lookalike) sleepwalks to a washing machine to launder her white gloves, while assassins pack their victims’ torsos or decapitated heads into cardboard boxes.
2 hours 55 mins (1 interval) sung in Italian
L’elisir d’amore: Thu 6
The repertoire is completed with a new production of Donizetti’s sparkling comedy, L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love), created especially for the Tour by Annabel Arden. Donizetti’s orchestral score alternates between joyful tunes and soaring melodies which perfectly complements this irresistibly charming opera.
