Independent Opera at Sadler's Wells — Pelléas et Mélisande

Archived Show

Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells presents Debussy’s masterpiece, Pelléas et Mélisande, in a newly commissioned 35-piece chamber orchestration by composer Stephen McNeff.

The intimate atmosphere of the Lilian Baylis Studio is the perfect setting in which to evoke the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde, and portray the subtle undercurrents and tensions that run deep in the human psyche.

The new production is conducted by Dominic Wheeler and features Andrew Foster-Williams (Golaud), Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy (Pelléas) and Ingrid Perruche (Mélisande).

The creative team behind the success of last year’s Elizabeth Maconchy double-bill returns with Alessandro Talevi (director), Madeleine Boyd (designer) and Matthew Haskins (lighting).

"If Independent Opera carries on in this vein – inventive staging, outstanding musical performance, good-looking ensemble cast – it’s in serious danger of giving opera a fashionable name"
