Phoenix Dance Theatre

Archived Show

Phoenix Dance Theatre returns to its London home under the helm of new Artistic Director, Javier De Frutos, with four works. To mark Javier's first London season with Phoenix, Sadler's Wells has co-commissoned a brand new piece, Paseillo, which will be performed alongside his new work Los Picadores.

Los Picadores features the dramatic music of Stravinsky’s Les Noces (The Wedding). This iconic choral work for dance has been reimagined as a violent, carnal struggle between men and women – the high octane movement sharpened by top fight director, Terry King.  Paseillo is envisaged as a companion piece to Los Picadores, and features six dancers performing movement on the theme of eros in art.

Both works follows the great success of Javier’s 2006 Phoenix & Sadler’s Wells co-commission – Nopalitos. He is also well-known for his choreography for Rambert, New Zealand Ballet and the hit West End musical, Cabaret (Olivier Award 2007 – Best Theatre Choreographer).

Henri Oguike is known for intricate, rhythmic choreography and his instinctive translation of the moods and themes of music into exhilarating movement. In Signal, the dancers' bodies beat out the rhythms of Japanese Taiko drums.

Phoenix Dance Theatre is undoubtedly one of the jewels in the crown of British contemporary dance and the latest spring offering reaffirms their position as the best of the best

Phoenix are also privileged to have permission to stage a rare revival of Jane Dudley's 1938 masterpiece, Harmonica Breakdown. Set to Sonny Terry's blues music, a lone dancer creates a poetic representation of an individual's steadfast struggle towards gaining self-respect and dignity.
