Sampled — Presented by Sadler's Wells and Big Dance

Archived Show

Sadler's Wells Sampled is back, making its first appearance at the Peacock Theatre in the West End for two days of incredible dance, music and workshops. Now in its sixth year, Sampled offers audiences the chance to enjoy everything from world-class hip hop and ballet to contemporary dance and flamenco in one evening, all for the bargain price of £12!

This year's line up includes Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company, English National Ballet, Jonzi D, Da Bratz from Boy Blue Entertainment, Cathy Waller, the winner of the inaugural New Adventures Choreographer Award, James Cousins and the winner of the Global Dance Contest.

Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company will present an extract from his 2010 work Quimeras. Exploring the lure of travel and the dream of a better life, Quimeras tells the story of a group of migrants who have come to Spain from Africa in search of work.

"The dance - by turns flamenco and high energy African movement - is superb"
DAILY TELEGRAPH
English National Ballet will perform a pas de deux from their lavish production of Swan Lake, choreographed by Derek Deane and set to Tchaikovsky's romantic and stirring score.
"English National Ballet’s Swan Lake is a great and poetic pleasure to watch"
DAILY TELEGRAPH
Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist and hip hop legend Jonzi D will perform Aeroplane Man, his witty and critically acclaimed solo about the true story of a young black man’s journey from East London around the world to find his spiritual homeland.
"Aeroplane Man asserts all the values you’d hope for – technique, thoughtfulness and abundant entertainment. You get the issues, but you get the skills too"
DAILY TELEGRAPH
Da Bratz is the youth group of Olivier Award-winning hip hop dance company Boy Blue Entertainment. Ranging from 9 to 18 years they have previously performed at Sadler’s Wells, Theatre Royal Stratford East and the Barbican, as well as featuring in the BBC’s Move Like Michael Jackson. For Sampled, they will perform Generation: Next 2012, which received a rapturous reception after its premiere at Breakin’ Convention ’12 earlier this year.

Cathy Waller is a contemporary and hip hop theatre dance artist. Earlier this year she was presented with the Blueprint Bursary Award, a commissioning fund given by East London Dance and Sadler’s Wells. The resulting work, Tempo, focuses on a vigorous series of rhythmical patterns and is set to an original score of percussion performed live on stage.

James Cousins' There We Have Been, takes inspiration from the troubled relationships portrayed in Murakami's best selling novel, Norwegian Wood. Presenting a daringly intimate glimpse into a secluded world of fragile dependency, this touching duet sees the two performers intensely folding, wrapping and balancing, with the female character barely ever touching the floor.

Sadler's Wells are proud to present the winner of this year’s Global Dance Contest, Ihsan Rustem who beat off competition from dozens of entries with State of Matter. A moving and beautiful contemporary dance work set to music by Arnalds and Richter, State of Matter will be performed by Northwest Dance Project from Portland, USA.

This year, Sampled is presented by Sadler’s Wells and Big Dance. Big Dance is a biennial festival featuring nine days of dance throughout the UK, showcasing the diversity of dance styles in the capital and across the country. It takes place from 7 – 15 July.
