This illustrated talk will look at some of the great paintings of the Tower of Babel that everybody knows and then consider the archaeological reality of Nebuchadnezzar’s great building at Babylon which gave rise to the familiar biblical story. It will consider the true meaning of the Tower of Babel story and how it and its powerful imagery found their way into contemporary mythology.

Come and listen to the beautiful sounds of this acclaimed oud player. Born in Algiers, Yazid has collaborated with many leading musicians including Robert Plant, Ali Slimani, Cheb Mami, Orchestra National de Barbes and Natacha Atlas.

Damien Jalet, co-choreographer of Babel (words) will give an exclusive insight into the background and his creative process.


All talks take place in the Khan Lecture Theatre, located close to the Lilian Baylis Studio. Free to all (no ticket necessary).

Dash Café will be in residence in the Garden Court by the Lilian Baylis Studio from the 18 – 19 May, where a special menu will be available.
