Slow Dancing — David Michalek

Archived Show

UK PREMIERE

Sadler's Wells is proud to present artist David Michalek’s magnificent moving-image installation Slow Dancing, part of The T-Mobile Big Dance in Trafalgar Square and Village Underground in Shoreditch.

In this series of larger-than-life, hyper-slow motion video portraits, 50 dancers and choreographers were individually shot on a specially constructed set using a high-speed, high-definition camera recording at 1,000 frames per second. Each short movement phrase is played back in 10 minutes of extreme slow motion, which enables the viewer to see the complexity of the simplest gestures, catching details that would normally escape the naked eye.

The list of participants in this unique installation reads like a who's who of dance talent, including Wendy Whelan, Shantala Shivalingappa, Judith Jamison, William Forsythe, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Alexei Ratmansky.

For a special evening of music that perfectly accompanies Michalek's beautiful installation, try our Ambient Music Night at Village Underground on 17 July.
