Pina Bausch is one of the most significant choreographers of the 21st century. After setting up her company in 1973, she created 42 pieces in a career spanning 36 years before her untimely death in 2009. This spring, Tanztheater Wuppertal returns to Sadler’s Wells with two rarely performed works from Bausch’s outstanding canon as the company celebrates its 40th anniversary.

"Wildly entertaining in its antics, eloquent and evocative in its magnificent international cast’s gloomy solos"
FINANCIAL TIMES on Vollmond (Full Moon)
Two Cigarettes in the Dark (1985) looks at the monotony of life, whilst in Vollmond (Full Moon) from 2006 which was featured in Wim Wenders film Pina, Bausch creates a completely unique world for the dancers on stage. The striking visuals of Bausch’s productions are ever-present in these works, with long-time collaborators Peter Pabst and Marion Cito’s breathtaking sets and costumes.

In 2012 Tanztheater Wuppertal performed a month-long sell-out season of international co-productions at Sadler's Wells and the Barbican to celebrate Pina Bausch and the Olympic and Paralympic year’s global focus.
