Nelson Crespo - Visual Arts

Nelson Crespo

10 November 2008 to January 2009

Sadler's Wells visual arts curator, Sacha Craddock, presents a series of ghostly and ethereal new works by pioneering Portuguese artist Nelson Crespo. Tempo, made specifically for Sadler's Wells opens with a private view on Monday 10th November 2008 and continues until January 2009.

The seven prints, commissioned for Sadler's Wells, have been created specifically for the exhibition space. The photographic images are of the backs of blankets taken from litho presses used during the printing process. Through repeated use, the ink has built over time to form ghostly images that make repeated reference to landscape, a delicate play between colours and an impressionistic description of time. While seeming to refer to the Romantic tradition of diffuse space and endless distance, the ghostly images are in fact humble and straightforward in origin.

Nelson Crespo was born in Germany in 1975 before moving to Portugal, he completed his MA in Print Making at the University of the Arts in London in 2004 and now lives and works in London. He was selected as one of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2005, the annual showcase of the best in emerging talent on the UK arts scene before taking up a residency at the Centre for Contemporary Graphic Art in Fukushima, Japan. His recent shows include Sans Papier at the Paço da Artes gallery in São Paulo, and Works on Paper at the Flux Factory in New York.

Visual Arts Curator, Sacha Craddock, is an independent art critic and curator. The chair of New Contemporaries, and former Turner Prize (1999) and John Moores Painting Prize (2008) judge, Craddock is also a former critic for both The Guardian and The Times.
