National Youth Dance Company & RIOT Company — (in between) and RIOT Offspring
This unique double bill opens with the inaugural performance of the National Youth Dance Company. (in between) is a specially commissioned work from NYDCs first Guest Artistic Director Jasmin Vardimon. The work combines Vardimons unique style of physical theatre with the youthful energy and exuberance of the dancers; poised between the world they have inherited and the world they want to live in, balanced between childhood and adulthood.
Completing the programme is RIOT Offspring, a powerful collaboration between five international choreographers: Sébastian Ramirez, Mafalda Deville, Pascal Merighi (guest artist, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch), Ivan Blackstock and Simeon Qsyea (BirdGang) and an intergenerational cast of 100, brought together to create a unique dance piece with Southbank Sinfonia playing Igor Stravinskys iconic The Rite of Spring.
In 1913, the unfamiliar sounds of The Rite of Spring were enough to ignite rage and rioting in a passionate public. 100 years later, prompted by recent riots, the cast of RIOT Offspring explore their own perceptions of rites, rituals and riots, creating a powerful piece of dance theatre.
RIOT Offspring is the third part of the series A String of Rites, a season of dance celebrating the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinskys revolutionary work.
