The Sampled experience doesn't just happen on stage. There are lots of opportunities to take part, learn and get involved in dance, so make sure you come early for installations, film screenings and more.

This year, pre-show front of house activities include Toni Jodar presenting a condensed version of Modern Dance Speaks!Tim Casson returns with The Dance WE Made, performance artist Vera Tussing's interactive Sound Bed will see audiences exploring stages of perception, and there will also be a Bal Moderne - an informal chance to learn some choreography from experts in the field of contemporary dance.

Workshops

The Sampled workshops are an exciting chance to learn moves by some of the leading dancers and dance makers working today. They are open to all levels of ability for adults aged 18+ (unless otherwise specified) and cost £2 each. To book a workshop, please call the ticket office on 0844 412 4300.

Workshop schedule

Saturday 28 June

2.30pm – 3.30pm
Contemporary — Wayne McGregor | Random Dance
A dancer from Wayne McGregor | Random Dance will lead a workshop starting with a high energy warm up followed by an exploration of new ways of generating content for dance, with choreographic tasks reflecting the methods used by McGregor in the studio when creating work for his internationally renowned company.

2.30pm – 3.30pm
Afro/House — Our Mighty Groove (Uchenna Dance)
Come and experience the Uchenna way of moving. Learn grooves inspired by African, vogue and house dance, set to Afro beats and house vibes.

3.45pm – 4.45pm
Ballet / Contemporary — Dance like a BalletBoy!
Open to both men and women, this relaxed and enjoyable workshop will give you the chance to interact with two dancers from the BalletBoyz company and learn something from their professional repetoire.

Jamaican Dancehall — Cindy Claes 
Dancehall is a Jamaican street dance culture. In this workshop Cindy will be teaching foundations of the genre as well new school moves. Cindy has travelled several times to Jamaica to study the culture and lead choreographic research on the island.

5pm – 6pm
Flamenco Youth— Lucia Caruso 
Age range 12-17
Lucia Caruso is an accomplished flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher with an international reputation. Her class will focus on body posture, footwork (zapateado) and choreography (palos flamencos). Lucia Caruso's classes unveil a wealth of sensual style, rhythm, gracefulness and strength emerging from the profound and authentic tradition of the flamenco dance.

5pm – 6pm
Hip Hop Breakin
Age range 12-17
Bboy coop from the UK leading bboy crew Soul Mavericks will teach a varied and exciting breakin' class aiming to increase strength, fitness, flexibily and balance.

 

Sunday 29 June

2.30pm – 3.30pm
Physical Theatre — Jasmin Vardimon Company
In this physical dance theatre workshop, participants will have the opportunity to experience working directly with company members and gain an insight into the work of Jasmin Vardimon.

2.30pm – 3.30pm
Tango — Corrientes Social Club  
The class will be an introduction to Argentine Tango, the session will open with a body warm up followed by a technique session where participants will get to know the basic principals of the dance. The exercises will help to achieve the good balance, posture and body awareness needed for Argentine tango. A basic couple sequence will be taught to introduce participants into the intricate and stylish footwork of this very popular Latin American dance.

3.45pm – 4.45pm
Hip Hop — ZooNation Dance Company 
Age range 12-17
Taught by members of the critically acclaimed ZooNation Dance Company, this class will guide you through a range of hip hop styles and introduce you to the unique style of the company’s narrative hip hop theatre.

3.45pm – 4.45pm
Ballet — English National Ballet
Join English National Ballet for an open taster ballet class focusing on the key elements of ballet technique including core strength, flexibility and posture.

5pm – 6pm
Contemporary – New Adventures & Re:Bourne
Come and explore some of Matthew Bourne’s creative techniques and have fun learning iconic movements from the Company’s repertoire. Led by Company’s principal dancer Michela Meazza.
