British Youth Opera presents a double-bill of seldom performed 20th Century British masterpieces: Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea and Gustav Holst’s Sāvitri.

Using the text of J M Synge’s play of the same name, Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea (1937) is an emotionally charged one act opera about the fateful impact of the elements upon a Donegal family.

This is also a rare opportunity to see Sāvitri on stage. Premiered in 1916, it is based on a traditional story in the epic Indian poem the Mahabharata. Holst tells the uplifting story of Sāvitri's defiance of Death, restoring her husband to life.

This production is presented in repertoire with Leoš Janáček’s ever-popular The Cunning Little Vixen.
