About Marcus Coates

Marcus Coates lives and works in London. He devises processes to explore the pragmatism and insight that imagined realities can offer, opening perspectives drawing on our sense of empathy.

He explicitly addresses a need to create inclusive languages where conventional strategies of understanding and rationalisation prove inadequate. He works across video, photography and performance.

Coates was the recipient of a Paul Hamyln Award (2008) and the Daiwa Art Prize (2009). He was the Calouste Gulbenkian Artist in Residence in the Galapagos Islands in 2008. He took part in Siobhan Davies Commissions with his film A Question of Movement with Henry Montes (2011). Solo exhibitions include: The Sounds of Others: A Biophonic Line, Manchester Museum of Science and Insustry (2014) The Trip, Serpentine Gallery, London and Implicit Sound, Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (2011); Psychopomp, Milton Keynes Gallery (2010); Marcus Coates, Kunsthalle, Zurich, Switzerland and Marcus Coates, Museum of Modern Art, New Orleans, USA, both 2009. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the Trafalgar Square 4th Plinth.
