Audition Notice - Dancers Wanted

The Pina Bausch Foundation, Sadler's Wells and Germaine Acogny’s École des Sables are looking for talented dancers resident of an African country to re-create Pina Bausch’s le Sacre du printemps. 

We need creative, passionate, versatile and reliable dancers who will commit themselves to the piece!

What we are looking for:

  • 38 professional dancers resident of an African country
  • well trained dancers with diverse experience welcomed, including traditional or contemporary African dance and hip hop styles
  • must have a valid passport
  • must be aged 18 or older at the time of audition
  • must be available in 2020 as per the dates of engagement below

Audition dates (on invitation and registration only):

First round
You must attend all 3 days of auditions in one of the following locations:

  • Thursday 5 December – Saturday 7 December: Abidjan, Ivory Coast
  • Monday 9 December – Wednesday 11 December: Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
  • Friday 13 December – Sunday 15 December: Dakar, Senegal

Second round
If you are called back, you must attend the final 4-day intensive workshop:

  • Tuesday 17 December – Friday 20 December: Toubab Dialaw, Senegal

Exact locations to be issued to those invited for an audition.
We will arrange for coaches to depart from Abidjan and Ouagadougou to take selected dancers to Toubab Dialaw for the re-call.

Deadline for application is 23:00 (BST) on Monday 2 September 2019.
Unfortunately, late applications cannot be considered.

We will respond to successful and unsuccessful applications the week commencing 30 September 2019.

Dates of engagement:

Dancers are required for:

  • Monday 3 February to Wednesday 18 March 2020: 7 week rehearsal period at École des Sables in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal.
  • Thursday 19 March to Monday 13 April 2020: Production time and performances in Dakar, Senegal and Wuppertal, Germany.
  • International touring from May 2020.

Please note that at this early stage, specific touring dates within the period above and the end date are subject to change.

All applicants must be available exclusively for this period.

A Pina Bausch Foundation, École des Sables & Sadler’s Wells production, co-produced with Holland Festival, Amsterdam; Festspielhaus, Saint Pölten; Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg and Théâtre de la Ville-Paris.

The project is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Goethe Institut and kindly supported by the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

How to apply
Please complete the form

You will need to provide:

  • Personal details
  • Passport details
  • Updated CV (1 page only)
  • Recent headshot/ portrait photo
  • Video of you dancing submitted in the form of a YouTube, Vimeo or Dailymotion link. The video must not exceed 45 seconds and must be good quality. Please make sure it includes performance footage as well as rehearsal/studio footage. You must be clearly and completely visible.

Practical information:

  • Dancers will be pre-selected from their applications and invited to audition.
  • You will need a google account in order to apply.
  • If invited, please confirm your place by Wednesday 30 October or you will not be able to attend the audition.
  • You must be available for the 3 initial audition days in your selected city AND for the entire 4-day intensive workshop in Toubab Dialaw.
  • The auditions will be in the format of a workshop.
  • You do not need to prepare anything for the audition.
  • Strictly no admission on the day, the audition is invitation only.
  • There will be no contributions made towards any travel or visas required for the first round of auditions. Travel by coach to Toubab Dialaw from Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso will be organised only for the second round of auditions for the selected participants

Frequently Asked Questions:

What length and/or format video should I provide?

  • Length shouldn’t exceed 45 seconds
  • Please send a link (YouTube, Vimeo or Dailymotion).
  • The video should NOT be password protected. On Vimeo and Youtube, you can upload a video but change the Privacy/Visibility settings to “unlisted”. It means that only people with the link can view it. It is a good substitute to a password protected video as it is not public.

Note: the video will not be shared and will be used as an audition material only.

When will I receive the result of my application?

We will respond to both successful and unsuccessful applications, week commencing 30 September 2019

Can I audition by video and not attend an audition?

Unfortunately we will not be accepting video-only applications on this occasion.

Can I email my application?

Unfortunately we are not accepting applications via email, you will have to apply via our application form. If you are having issues with the form, please contact your local organisation.

I’m having issues with uploading files onto the Google form.

Please try submitting the form on a different browser or server. If the problem persists, please contact your local organisation.

I made a mistake in my application form. How can I change this?

You will receive a copy of your application by email. At the top of this email you can click ‘Edit response’ to change the information you provided. If you did not receive this email, please check your junk mail.

I am only free on one of the audition dates, can I still apply?

No. You need to be free for the first 3-day audition and for the 4-day intensive workshop.

Do I need to have had formal dance training?

No, we are simply looking for world-class contemporary dancers with strong contemporary technique

I missed the deadline, will you accept a late application?

No. Unfortunately, we cannot accept late applications.

What clothes should I wear to audition in?

Clothing that you feel comfortable dancing in.

Do I need to prepare a solo?

No, this is a group workshop audition.

Do I need to bring a printed copy of my headshot?

No, you only need to upload a digital copy to the application form as part of the application process.

Do I need to bring food?

Snacks and drinks will be provided.
