Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch present the second piece in their annual season which celebrates the choreographic genius of Bausch as the company continue to perform her 46 works all around the world.
The 1987 piece Ahnen (a deliberately ambiguous title, meaning either ‘ancestors’ or ‘foreboding’) has been revived by the company after a decade’s absence in the repertory. Featuring a stage filled with enormous cacti, Ahnen contains what is typical of Bausch’s theatrical universe, and is about “love, loss, longing and desire, and the eradicable human will to survive all” (New York Times).
During her 40 years of choreographing, Pina Bausch developed an artistic canon renowned for its diverse cultural influences and imaginative scenography. One of Bausch’s most visually striking pieces, Ahnen has never before been performed in the UK.
