The master of American contemporary dance celebrated for his arresting and imaginative choreography returns to Sadler’s Wells after a five year hiatus with this stunningly beautiful and moving reimagining of the Ancient Persian poetic tale Layla and Majnun.

In this remarkable work, Mark Morris has collaborated with the Silkroad Ensemble, the famous musical collective founded by Yo-Yo Ma, and the British artist Howard Hodgkin, to stage the famous Azerbaijani opera by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, Layla and Majnun – one of the Middle East’s most beloved tales, its equivalent of Romeo and Juliet.

Time and time again, Mark Morris proves “there is no other dance company so at one with its choreography and its music” (Financial Times) – and Layla and Majnun will be no exception. Performed by 16 dancers, Mark Morris makes exquisite use of the mesmerising mugham music sung by the celebrated vocalists Alim Qasimov and Fargana Qasimova, and played live by ten of the most outstanding musicians in the world, all members of the Silkroad Ensemble.
