Every summer, the National Theatre puts on a free outdoor arts festival outside its doors, right by the south bank of the Thames. For the first time, Sadler’s Wells will be making an appearance, putting on a weekend of dance performances and offering free family workshops.

Breakin’ Convention gets things started on Friday night with Freestyle Funk Forum, an hour of improvised theatre that is hip hop’s answer to Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Join them for dance performances, beatboxing, turntablism and rap, followed up with impromptu dance workshops and a DJ set.

Then ease yourself into the weekend with a workshop. There’s plenty to choose from, including yoga, lindy hop, and flamenco, as well as an inclusive ballroom workshop by Step Change Studios, who also perform excerpts from Fusion, the UK’s first ballroom showcase for disabled and non-disabled dancers.

In the evening Vidya Patel & Shammi Pithia perform Converse, a brand new work combining kathak dance and contemporary music. Dotdotdot Dance, the UK-based flamenco dance company, perform When Viola Met Margas and Into Being, challenging conventional perceptions of flamenco with a contemporary approach and striking visual imagery, followed by live music playing you out into the night.

Then on Sunday it’s time to help out The Dance WE Made, as they have only two hours to create a brand new dance! There’s also chance to see the Company of Elders, Sadler’s Wells’ inspirational resident company of over-60s performers and Ceilidh Liberation Front, London’s most radical ceilidh band.
