Sadler’s Wells has partnered with Random Acts to create original films from three distinctive artists, to coincide with our new commissions for the Reckonings stage production.

Reflecting a variety of dance styles from post-modern dance to contemporary African and hip-hop theatre, the films are informed by themes such as race representation, gender and identity.

OTHER is a collaboration between choreographer/dancer Julie Cunningham and director/cinematographer Cordelia Beresford. The film is a duet, exploring questions of identity and the shifting nature of relationships. The painterly use of colour in costumes and locations conjures up a dream-like space. Cordelia Beresford is a filmmaker and video artist whose works explore issues of mental distress and representations of the female body on camera. Her works combine choreographed movement with cinematic lighting and she has worked with celebrated Australian contemporary dancers.

Julie Cunningham is an award-winning dance artist formerly with Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Michael Clark Company, whose work is concerned with gender and identity and in the body and its emotional states, often working between movement and text from sources ranging from popular culture to literature. Their recently launched company has performed at Barbican Pit Theatre, V&A’s REVEAL festival, Southbank Centre and Sadler’s Wells among others.

Commissioned for Sadler's Wells' 20th anniversary, Reckonings premiered here in October 2018.
