London’s largest biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture, Shubbak returns to Sadler’s Wells this time introducing the work of Lebanese choreographer and performer Ali Chahrour in a rare UK appearance.

Part of a trilogy exploring mourning rituals, May he rise… is a dance performance and a ceremony where death in all its primitiveness emerges from the depth of the earth to become a rite for life. A mourning woman acts as a priestess, summoning the three men to experience grief and loss with her. Tapping into stories and legends summoned from deep cultural memory, this piece calls upon our collective human experience, in a collaboration with great Lebanese talent including the musicians Ali Hout and Abed Kobeissy aka Two or The Dragon, an up an coming electro-acoustic duo revisiting traditional instruments, and Syrian actress Hala Omran (Cannes Festival film by Yousry Nasrallah). An affecting and daring work that places the living body centre stage.

Presented in partnership with Sadler’s Wells with support from Arts Council England, Bagri Foundation, British Council and Drosos Foundation.
