If One Keeps Walking is the latest work by Hagit Yakira Dance who return to Sadler’s Wells after curating a Wild Card evening in 2016. With a focus on creating a counterpoint to experiences of loneliness and isolation, it is a site-responsive, experiential event where you are invited into a promenade performance outdoors before settling in the theatre. It brings together a cast of five exceptional professional dancers performing alongside a cast of people of all ages and abilities, drawn from the local community in Islington, London.
You are taken on a mindful journey that begins outside Sadler’s Wells, walking and watching, in and through the urban environment, using subtle invitations from the performers who act as your guides. The journey is simultaneously quiet, animated, solitary and united. It culminates in the Lilian Baylis Studio, where live music and song from acclaimed composer Sabio Janiak and vocal artist Api Ascaso unfold together with dancing from the full cast. Boundaries between audience, performers and dancers are blurred to create a unique communal experience that is emotional, subtle and deeply human.
- "Contemporary dance, like its visual art equivalent, can have a bad reputation... it doesn’t really seem like the people speaking the language want you to know it. Hagit Yakira’s work stands out because it radiates generosity. It feels like it wants you to understand, to share with you its ideas..."
