Taster dance workshops Breaking

Breaking workshop

Level: Beginners – Advanced

Breaking might look intimidating, but when you start slow and break it down, you’d be amazed at what you can do with a bit of practice. We’re taking you on a crash course in some key breaking moves!

This series of workshops is led by Roy, Niek, Stepper and Lee, also known as The Ruggeds; a breaking crew from The Netherlands, who compete in battles and appear on stages all over world. You might recognise them from Justin Beiber’s Where Are Ü Now music video.

Zulu Spins

5 minutes

Step by step, we learn the art of Zulu Spins – a kind of spin on the floor from a crouching position. Lee from The Ruggeds also demonstrates how to CC – another common floor move, lifting arms and legs off the ground while twisting the body. This workshop involves floorwork, so only take part if you feel comfortable.

Knee Switch & Baby Freeze

7 minutes

Niek from The Ruggeds guides us through the Knee Switch – another key floor move in breaking! If you’re feeling confident, they’ll show us how to do a Baby Freeze too – a position where you balance on your hands and head whilst lifting your feet off the ground. This move is optional so only give it a go if it feels right and practice with caution!

Threading

4 minutes

Threading is something that can be done standing up or sitting down, and will exercise the brain as much as the body. Roy from The Ruggeds shows us how to use our limbs to create a needle and start threading! Build up speed and play with adding your own style.
