Chicos Mambo TUTU

Freesheet

A dancer from the back, standing on tiptoe as if dancing ballet, wearing tutu-trousers. The background is a solid red colour, and below the dancer is an array of large red and yellow giant pom poms.

About the show

Choreographed by Philippe Lafeuille, TUTU pays homage to the dance world that can sometimes take itself a little too seriously. Yes, a bare-chested tutu-clad man can perform a stunningly graceful pointe solo! This playful new perspective shatters stereotypes and makes dance accessible for all.

Each of TUTU’s 20 scenes is a colourful surprise, transporting us into the company’s whimsical, theatrical universe. The six male performers, like chameleons surprise and impress us with their hilarious performance across diverse dance disciplines.

About the company

Philippe Lafeuille met two dancers: a Catalan and a Venezuelan. Their experience as dancers and their sense of humour developed this spicy spirit, which is present in their shows. Their first show in 1994 was a real success in Spain and in France. It was recognized by the critics and the public, so much that the group even won the price of “Company revelation” in many competitions.

Their show Méli-Mélo, created in 1998, allows them to organize an international tour. Presented first in Spain, then in France and in Italy, the show was also performed in Japan for a two-months tour. The success carried on with Méli-Mélo II, presented for the first time at Avignon’s Festival OFF in France in 2006. This sequel won the “Best International show” at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and toured regularly in Europe and North America until 2013.

In 2014, Philippe Lafeuille, artistic director and choreographer of the company, embarks on a new adventure for the 20th anniversary of the company. He imagines TUTU, featuring an all-male cast visiting diverse ballet themes, with outlandish costumes and hilarious comic scenes. Originally presented in the mythical Théâtre Bobino in Paris, the show has gone onto international success, ravishing more than 600,000 spectators and will celebrate its 800th performance at the Peacock Theatre in London this month. It won the audience choice award in the “Dance” category at the 50th Avignon’s Festival OFF, and the audience award at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Since then, the tutu-men continue to lift audiences into their flamboyant universe. They recently wrapped up a run of 60 performances at the Théâtre Libre in Paris and, after visiting London, will embark on a tour across the Netherlands and France.
