FIVE DAYS IN THE SUN Emanuel Gat Dance

Freesheet

On a black stage, a dancer in a bright red dress sweeps her leg up in a kick. A group of dancers wearing cream dresses walk towards the back of the stage

At first there is only a golden haze. Out of it, figures emerge one by one, draped in long silks that drift like breath and soon turn to light. A single gesture passes from body to body, and a community takes shape.

To mark thirty years of creation, Emanuel Gat brings together twelve young dancers, an entirely new company, to journey through Mahler‘s Fifth Symphony, a score born between a brush with death and the dawn of love. Rather than illustrating the music, Gat lets the dance spring from its inner logic: stormy, radiant, whirling, as changeable as nature itself. Bodies surge and graze, form and dissolve, each dancer keeping a singular voice within an almost tangible collective listening. Gat’s own lighting composes a second music in counterpoint to the orchestra.

At the height of the Scherzo, the orchestra falls silent, leaving only children’s voices and the calling of gulls. Then the Adagietto closes the journey with a stillness that seeks no resolution.

Five tableaux move from haze toward clarity: a hymn to youth and to living together, perhaps a foreshadowing of a world at peace.
