A dancer wearing a full-face mask - a young woman in a high-necked, white evening gown – looks up towards a glitterball. Squares of mirror flake away from the glitterball and fall down on her, while her feet are hidden by a heap of bin bags crammed with rubbish.

A wedding is due to take place in a mansion by the sea. Meticulous preparations are in train, no detail will be overlooked. But a storm is blowing from Paradise, there’s trouble ahead, and ways must be found for this celebration of love to continue as planned. In the hands of Familie Flöz this clever social commentary unfolds as the search for understanding and happiness begins.

Founded in 1994, Familie Flöz is an international pool of theatre-makers, actors, musicians, dancers, directors, mask/light/set and costume designers and dramatic advisors. Based in Berlin, it has its origins at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, the only public education facility for physical theatre in Germany.

The company has performed its work in 43 countries throughout the world. This is the company’s fifth visit to the Mime Festival, having previously presented Teatro Delusio (2005), Ristorante Immortale (2006), Hotel Paradiso (2009) and Infinita (2016).

“We believe that masks are as universal as they are ingenious inventions of man and inseparably linked to theatre and our search for ourselves. We believe that laughter enables the audience to open up, become vulnerable and experience a wide range of emotions. We also believe that failure in life plays the secret leading role. That is why we try to give failure an important place in our work. This is true for the stories we tell and for the way we want to play theatre.“

About LIMF

London International Mime Festival (LIMF) is an annual festival of contemporary visual theatre. Essentially wordless and multi-disciplinary, its programme embraces circus-theatre, puppetry/animation, object theatre, mime, live art and physical theatre. Founded in 1977 at the Cockpit Theatre as a one-off event to showcase the work of British mimes, theatre clowns and other physical and visual theatre artists, the festival rapidly grew in scale, quality and reputation. Since that start in one small theatre LIMF has used more than thirty London venues – from Tate Modern and West End theatres, to the Almeida, Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre, ICA, Jacksons Lane, Royal Opera House, Sadler’s Wells, Shunt Vaults, Soho Theatre, Shoreditch Town Hall and Southbank Centre. The festival has presented over 800 productions over its 47-year history.

LIMF has an international reputation and is the UK’s longest established annual, international theatre festival. In recent years the festival’s productions and its two directors have received various honours and awards, most notably three Olivier Award nominations including winner of Best New Dance Production in 2015 (Peeping Tom’s 32 Rue Vandenbranden at The Barbican), a Total Theatre lifetime achievement award and the 2017 Empty Space – Peter Brook Special Achievement Award.

LIMF is evolving. Founded in 1977, its 47th year will see the final edition of the festival in its present form. Directors Helen Lannaghan and Joseph Seelig plan to continue together to promote physical and visual theatre, maintain their consultancy and advisory roles and encourage development of physical and visual theatre artists and innovative work. Further information in due course.
