Support for Emerging Talent

As the UK's leading dance house, dedicated to bringing the very best international and British dance to London audiences, Sadler’s Wells is uniquely positioned to support the professional development of dance artists in the UK at every stage from emergence through their professional practice as dance makers.

Supporting emerging choreographers is vital to ensuring that dance continues to grow and evolve. Sadler’s Wells does this by running programmes which provide the space and resources for artists to make work and develop their practice.

Having an association with such a respected and influential institution in the dance community has given me confidence as a younger choreographer to make braver choices than I might otherwise have done, especially to take the step to prioritise my choreographic work over my performing career, a transition often difficult to navigate.
Alex Whitley, New Wave Associate Artist and Summer University participant

  • Summer University, launched in 2011 and generously supported by Jerwood Charitable Trust. The Summer University supports 15 aspiring choreographers during an annual two-week intensive course, taking place over four years.
  • Wild Card is a programme of support for young, active, dynamic choreographers and producers, giving them an opportunity to curate up to two nights of work in the Lilian Baylis Studio. This gives each artist an opportunity to experience the world of a large theatre and opens up new work to the Sadler’s Wells audience.
  • New Wave Associate Artist programme is aimed at artists on the cusp of a significant breakthrough. A structured programme of support directs artists to opportunities which will further develop their careers, and a Sadler’s Wells commitment to commission and show new work from each artist. This unique programme is generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
