How to dance salsa | Beginner’s Dance Workshop in basic salsa step and rhythm 1
Luanda Pau: Hello everyone. Welcome to the taster dance workshop of Cuban Salsa. I am Luanda Pau, and I will introduce Theresa and Debbie. Before we start, please make sure you get some space around you, like this you can go smoothly with your body and just feel relaxed. This workshop is for all levels, doesn’t matter your experience on it, so it’s just about connecting with the Cuban flavour. So, this workshop is for everyone, especially for you. Here we go.
Now we will start with the fundamentals of basic salsa steps and rhythm. So, to dance Cuban salsa we need to count the numbers one, two, three, pause on number four, and then go to five, six, seven, and pause again on number eight. We will try first listening to the music. So here we go. Let’s start by clapping with me from now:
One, one more time, and one. One more time, and, and two three. Fantastic.
So, if we count, we will start from this side stepping backwards on numbers one, two and three. We go now one, two and three. Then we will use the other side to step forward on five, six, seven steps numbers.
Five, six and seven. One more time. One, two, three and five, six, seven.
If we try to connect about the time of the music, the clap will be in between the steps. Let’s try with the clapping, from now:
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
Let’s try with the music: One, two, three, five, six, go. One, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven. Brilliant.
Now, we will show you from the side. Debbie, if you are sitting, can show you as well how we can connect just with the upper body. If you just want to do it with the upper body, you just lean backward and forward.
Yeah. And you pause in between on number fours and then you lean backwards and forwards. Counting: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight.
For those that are standing, make sure as well that when you step backward, you lean back and then forwards six and seven. Let’s try again with the counting, and one, two, three, four and five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four and five, six seven, eight.
Let’s go one more time with the music: five, six, one, two, go. one, two, three, five, six, seven. Leaning back and forward. Let’s start and one, two, three, five, six, seven.

Before we start, please make sure you get some space around you like this you can go smoothly with your body and just feel relaxed. This workshop is for all levels. It doesn’t matter your experience on it. So, it’s just about connecting with the Cuban flavor. So, this workshop is for everyone, especially for you. Here we go.
Today we will be practicing these side-to-side steps. But before we go
I need to tell you the Cuban salsa is not about technical details. It’s just about the connection with the music and with the vibe of your body wave. So, we will start stepping to that side. Stepping out one, two, three. We wait for four, which is the pause, and then we go other side on five, six, seven. Five, six, seven.
Let’s go one more time. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
For those that are sitting, Debbie will show you how just with the upper body
you lean to one side, two, three, bring it back on the four and then five, six, seven, eight.
One more time. One, two, three, four and then five, six, seven, eight. We will go with the music, but first with slow motion. And then we will go to the normal speed, here we go.
Let’s go on the one, one, two, three and five, six, seven, again; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six. One more time. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Very good.
Let’s show you now from this side. We continue with slow motion and then
we will come back to the normal speed. Here we go.
Five, six, seven, and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three. Fantastic. We are back now. Get ready for the real speed of the music:
One, two, three five, six, go.
One, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven.
One, two, three, five, six, seven. Five, six, seven.
Let’s show you one more time. Side to side steps with the normal speed of the music. Here we go: one, two, three, five, six, go.
Five, six, seven, one, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven.

How to dance salsa | Beginner’s Dance Workshop in back-to-back steps
Luanda Pau: Hello everyone. Welcome to the taster dance workshop of Cuban salsa. I am Luanda Pau and here is Debbie and Theresa. This workshop is open to all levels, doesn’t matter what is your level, it’s for you, this workshop. So, before we start, make sure we make some space. If you are dancing from home, make sure that you feel comfortable and ready to go. Here we go.
Today we will learn and practice the back-to-back steps. Remember that we step in Cuban salsa on times one, two, three. We pause at four and then we step again on five, six, seven. Getting the last pause at eight. So, this time we will step with both feet backwards.
We will start on that side stepping backwards. On one, two, coming back at, three. Waiting for fourth. Other side. Backwards as well.
Five, six, seven and eight. Make sure as well that you rotate your upper body and you slide your foot straight back to the diagonal. Yep. And then we bring it back together with your upper body as well. So, let’s try to put all these three things together: Five, six, seven, go!
One, two, three, four and five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
You can even do it if you sit. You can watch Theresa. Theresa will just open a body wave rotation to that side and go to the other side. On counting and on one, two three, four, rotate, six, seven one more time and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight.
Let’s go with the music:
One, two, three, five, six, seven. Go! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six… one more time! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Fantastic!
Let’s try now from the right side. Same speed of the music. We go very slow at the beginning and then we will speed up in the right time of the music. Here we go:
Five, six, five, six, seven and one, two, three and five, six, seven and relax. One, two, three, four, five, six, one more time. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, Five, six, seven, eight. Fantastic!
Let’s try now to go to the real speed of the music. Counting. one, two, three, pause four, five, six, seven, pausing at eight. Here we go. Five, six, one, two
Here we go. And one, two, three five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, one, two, three, five, six, seven, one, two, three, five, six, go!

How to dance salsa | Beginner’s Dance Workshop in transitions between steps
Luanda Pau: Hello, everyone. Welcome to the taster dance workshop of Cuban Salsa. I am Luanda Pau, and here is Debbie and Theresa. This workshop is open to all levels. Doesn’t matter what is your level, it’s for you, this workshop. So, before we start, make sure we make some space. If you are dancing from home, make sure that you feel comfortable and ready to go. Here we go. So, we’ll be putting together different steps to create a short routine of dance. If you haven’t seen the steps we will be practicing on, you can refer to workshops one, two and three.
The first steps we will be practicing will be the back-and-forth steps. As a little recap. We will step in from back, Two, three, then four, five, six, seven. Again, one, two, three and five, six, seven. Second step will be just going side to side. As a reminder, we step on number one, two, three, fourth is a break and then we go on five, six, seven getting the last pause at number eight. So, let’s put together this side-to-side step. Here we go.
One, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight, one more time, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight and the last step will be back-to-back steps, going and starting on this side. Starting now on one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four five, six, seven and eight.
How do we go to the transition? Yes, we will go in counting on number four and eight. Those pauses are the ones, the times that we will use to swap from one step to the other. Let’s practice. We will help you with the counting. Like this. You realise that we will swap in the steps in between the pause timings. Are you ready, girls?
Five, six, from the beginning. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight.
Swap. Two, three, four, five six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six. Wait for eight, and one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight. Here we go. We will explain it once again. Look to the side. Starting now. Get ready. Let’s go.
Five, six, seven and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight. Pause and eight, side to side.
Three, four, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight. Back-to-back steps. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Here we will try one more time, but with the music. First of all, we go with slow motion of the music and at the end, get ready, because we are going with the normal speed. Here we go, with the music in slow motion, here we go:
And one, two, three and five, six, seven. On one, two, three five, six, seven and one, two, three, five, six, seven, one, two, three, five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Backward, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One more time. Here we go. And now we go with the real speed of the music. Get ready. timing. One, two, three, five, six, seven, one, two, three five, six, seven, go! One, two, three, five, six, seven. Side to side, back steps. One, two, three, five, six, seven, one, two, three. Starting again! Forward and backward, side to side and one, two, back, back-to-back. Yeah!
