The Dance Factory Dada Masilo’s HAMLET
+ £4.00 transaction fee
Shakespeare’s masterpiece Hamlet, like never before.
Gone are most of the words, they’re replaced by movement and music.
Award-winning South African choreographer Dada Masilo, renowned for her dynamic reinterpretation of classics, including Swan Lake, Giselle and The Rite of Spring (retitled The Sacrifice), has reimagined Shakespeare’s power play as an hour-long dance theatre piece. Through the eyes of the maiden, Ophelia, the audience is invited to explore what leads to her ultimate despair. Masilo’s interpretation explores misogyny and manipulation, and attempts to make sense of Ophelia’s madness.
With references to classical ballet, african dance and period dance in both choreography and music, the work is accompanied by an original score from Thuthuka Sibisi.
This work premiered in Vienna at Impulstanz in July 2024 and was subsequently staged at Kampnagel, Hamburg and at de Singel, Antwerp.
Co-produced by Sadler’s Wells

★★★★ THE TIMES on Giselle
Stunning. A brilliant fusion of classical and contemporary movement that reflects her South African roots.
★★★★★ NORTH WEST END on Giselle
She deals ‘with European ballet traditions’ and develops from this ‘a completely unique vocabulary’
TAZ
Not only images, but also bodies in motion often say more than a thousand words.
AUSTRIA PRESS AGENTUR
The daughter of Polonius, King Claudius’s chief counsellor, Ophelia is governed by the patriarchal values of the royal court and is expected to be obedient to her controlling father. Prior to the events of the play she was romantically linked to Hamlet, and is manipulated by him and her brother Laertes for their own personal advantage. The restrictions on her personal agency represents the restrictions women faced in the Elizabethan age, and continue to face to this day.
