Phoenix Dance Theatre Interplay
Play Trailer+ £4.00 transaction fee
A powerful, playful and joyous mixed bill fusing diverse artistic voices and dance styles.
Following last year’s sold-out production of Giovanni’s Room, Phoenix Dance Theatre returns with Interplay, a mixed bill showcasing work by a host of internationally renowned choreographers. Rich with duality, this production is a fusion of distinct artistic voices with creative collaboration at its core.
Featuring duet and ensemble works, each piece offers contrasting perspectives with boldness and dynamism, celebrating the beauty of shared vision and artistic exchange.
Next of Kin by Marcus Jarrell Willis
Over a decade since its New York premiere at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre, this reimagination of the witty nuances between two like-minded souls colliding on their journey through life enters the company’s repertoire.
Why Are People Clapping?! by Ed Myhill (restaged by Camille Giraudeau)
Rhythm and humour are the driving force of this piece, inspired by Ed Myhill’s appreciation for the music of life. Set to composer Steve Reich’s Clapping Music, rhythm can be found in a tennis match, footsteps in an empty street and in the beat of our own hearts.
Small Talk by Pett Clausen Knight
In a room that feels both intimate and estranged, two figures struggle to recognise what has quietly slipped between them. Hovering between conflict and confused tenderness, Small Talk reveals how relationships often fade not through catastrophe, but slow exhaustion.
Suite Release by Yusha-Marie Sorzano and Marcus Jarrell Willis
A new work that reclaims dance as instinct, inheritance, resistance and joy. Drawing from the origins of hip hop and house as spaces for gathering and release, ritual unfolds in place of repertoire as audiences are asked not just to watch, but to remember.
Phoenix Dance Company captures the diversity of multi-cultural Britain – the longest contemporary dance company outside of London, it creates dynamic and relevant work that embodies cultural narratives that are often overlooked or untold.
Header image description: Four female dancers appear mid-movement. In a clustered formation, they are throwing their heads around, their long hair splaying out. They have a mixture of facial expressions – some are laughing, some are yelling. The dancers wear button up shirts and bow ties in pale blues and pinks, and grey pants. There is an image effect where a translucent, zoomed-in version of the same image is layered over the top, giving the image a slightly blurry look.
