Three unique works, one unforgettable evening
Landscapes brings together three powerful solos that reveal Russell Maliphant’s artistry at its most distinct: a dialogue between movement, light, and sound, through collaboration with his team of award-winning artists.
In A Landscape (performed by Maliphant) transforms textiles into shifting environments that reshape the stage before our eyes. With lighting by Panagiotis Tomaras, and a score by Dana Fouras, costumes and cloth by Stevie Stewart, each become extensions of the choreography itself. Light blurs and multiplies the image of the dancer – material and light merge seamlessly.
Afterlight, performed by the exceptional Daniel Proietto, was commissioned by Sadler’s Wells as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev and hailed a “miniature masterpiece” (The Telegraph). Inspired by the drawings and legacy of Vaslav Nijinsky, it draws on motifs of circles and spirals, echoing Nijinsky’s geometric sketches and his own distinct approach to movement. Set to Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes 1-4 the cyclical, meditative structures create a perfect counterpart in this emotionally transformative piece.
The iconic solo Two will be performed by celebrated dancer Alina Cojocaru, whose virtuosic presence brings a unique dynamism to this work. Constrained within a square of light, the dancer builds momentum partnering with the light, driven by Andy Cowton’s rhythmic score and Michael Hulls’ sculptural light, with costumes by Stevie Stewart.
Together these solos form Landscapes: an evening that is transformative, where pure aesthetic elements merge into a sensory world resonating far beyond the stage.

Who was Sergei Diaghilev?
Sergei Giaghilev was a Russian promoter of the arts and the founder of Ballets Russes, one of the 20th century’s most influential ballet companies. Known for working with artists at the forefront of their fields, he revitalized ballet by integrating the ideals of other art forms – music, painting, and drama – with those of the dance. In 2009 Sadler’s Wells premiered In the Spirit of Diaghilev, honouring his legacy and marking the centenary year of the founding of Ballets Russes.
