Wild Card Akeim Toussaint Buck Radical Visions
Wild Card returns with more offerings from a new generation of artists, invited to curate their own night. This January, we welcome Akeim Toussaint Buck to the Lilian Baylis Studio to present his Wild Card, Radical Visions.
The evening will showcase artists who work with the themes of social transformation and diasporic identity, celebrating the resilience and deep joy of their communities whilst highlighting the oppression and trauma they face. The experiences, creativity and wisdom of people from the margins of society will be at the centre, shifting the narrative to move beyond preconceptions and expand consciousness.
London-based dance duo FUBUNATION present a preview of a powerful new all-male quintet Black Is…, unpacking black identity and culture. Alethia Antonia performs an extract of her solo Inscribed In Me: a visceral expression of repairing the mind and soul from traumatic experiences. The evening also includes Displaced, Toussaint Buck’s cinematic reimagining of his critically acclaimed solo Windows of Displacement, exploring race, identity, unity and power. Threaded through the evening are live music and spoken word encounters.
Pre-show content from 7pm in the Fox Garden Court café.
Image description: In front of an altar and stained glass window, Akeim Toussaint Buck leaps towards us, left leg lifted straight in front, right arm extended in a high diagonal. His long locks fly straight up above his head. His chest and feet are bare and he wears loose, layered white trousers with intricate black embroidery that echoes the rich patterns of the church interior.
Co-Produced by Sadler’s Wells and Akeim Toussaint Buck.
The works presented as part of this evening are supported using public funding through Arts Council England.
