Pioneers of contemporary dance return with two electrifying programmes

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the company that defines artistic excellence and Black cultural legacy, returns to London under the leadership of new Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack. Nearly seven decades after its founding, Ailey continues to propel dance in exhilarating new directions – pushing the boundaries of what the human body can do and what the human spirit can achieve.

Two different programmes showcase the best of the company’s repertory. The Legacy Programme presents classics by Alvin Ailey including the jazz-infused Night Creature; the lyrical, yearning A Song For You; and an excerpt of the transcendent solo Cry. This programme also features Ronald K. Brown’s spellbinding Grace, a rapturous blend of modern and West African dance.

The New Works programme highlights creations by some of the most respected contemporary choreographers, including Medhi Walerski’s intriguing Blink of an Eye; Lar Lubovitch’s ethereal Many Angels; Jamar Roberts’ meditative Song of the Anchorite; and Judith Jamison’s sensual duet A Case of You.

Both programmes conclude with Alvin Ailey’s iconic Revelations, the ultimate anthem to resilience and joy. Since its premiere in 1960, Revelations has been performed continuously around the globe, making it the most widely seen modern dance work in the world.

About Alvin Ailey

Experience the legacy of this iconic dancer, director, choreographer and activist.

Alvin Ailey is a powerhouse of American dance. His career began in a time when opportunities for African American dancers were limited, but he strived to create a space for Black artists to express their experiences and heritage. Founded in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was one of the first companies to welcome dancers of all races and backgrounds.

When Ailey began creating dances, he drew upon his “blood memories” of the South, blues, spirituality, and gospel as inspiration. He is best known for his master work, Revelations, which has been seen in 71 countries and by more than 25 million people, with audience members ranging from Oprah to Obama.

When Ailey died on 1 December 1989, The New York Times said of him:

You didn’t need to have known [him] personally to have been touched by his humanity, enthusiasm, and exuberance and his courageous stand for multi-racial brotherhood.

‘Revelations’ - the most widely seen modern dance piece

Part of the Ailey repertoire since its creation in 1960, Revelations has been seen by more than 23 million people in 71 countries – more than any other modern dance piece. Considered Ailey’s masterwork, Revelations draws on his childhood recollections or ‘blood memories’ – memories that were so strong he felt they were part of him as much as the blood that ran through his veins. A powerful tribute to African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom, this influential piece takes musical inspiration from traditional African American blues, work songs and spirituals.
