Guests Select: Sadé and Kristina Alleyne

Sadé and Kristina Alleyne

Alleyne Dance was founded in 2014 by award winning dancers and twin sisters, Kristina and Sadé Alleyne. Their choreographic aesthetic reflects the sisters’ diverse background in athleticism and dance training. Within their contemporary style they blend West African, Caribbean, hip hop, kathak and circus skills, delivered as fast paced and dynamic movement.

Here, Sadé and Kristina share some of the diverse influences on their dance career…

Pina Bausch The Rite of Spring – Rehearsals at École des Sables

If only this production was touring during the time we transitioned into dance. To see so many bodies that look like ours; to have the power, the athleticism and dynamics is striking. To witness fragility through strong looking bodies brought a whole new dimension to this iconic choreography. Please enjoy viewing the rehearsals of the re-creation. As Alleyne Dance, we value processes from rehearsals to the performance(s). Our motto is, “Let The Physicality Provoke The Emotion”. You can see the inspiring dancers in this clip learning The Rite Of Spring, reflective of our values and motto.

Meet the cast | For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy. A play by Ryan Calais Cameron

Have a look out for future work by Ryan. Ryan is a very inspiring writer that is brave enough to highlight true stories, with difficult themes. He also likes to share the script of his plays, where you take time to re-experience the stories again. This play is very witty whilst talking about tough issues. We are both inspired by actors and how they connect to a character they are playing. The actors in this play are beautiful men that are confident to show fragility as they use the characters to educate themselves. Please enjoy this behind the scenes interview. The playtext is available to purchase here.

Descent

Antoine Marc is a multi award-winning director and producer working internationally on developing movement narrative in films and bringing creative technology to dance.

Antoine Marc works with such a talented and humble team. Each artist is strong on their own but when they work as a team following Antoine’s direction, it is magical. Descent is special as he worked with beautiful dancers (including our own Sadé from Alleyne Dance). Antoine likes to work with bodies, to explore how they create shapes and how bodies can be distorted by the camera to give you an image of something else.

After witnessing the process of making Descent, and seeing the finished project, we had to work with Antoine with Alleyne Dance projects and we continue to work with him up to this date.

Enjoy and be inspired by the choices in this film including the colour scheme/grading, textures, qualities and dancers.

Jessica Ennis Wins Gold in the London 2012 Olympics

Our physical journeys started with athletics. We ran for the North London team, Enfield and Haringey in track events 100m, 200m, 400m, Relay and field events, long jump and triple. We both chose dance to be our careers over athletics but we never lost interest in the sport. Sometimes we questioned if we made the right decision transitioning to dance. It wasn’t until we performed in the 2012 London Olympic opening ceremony where we knew that we were in the right place; dance had taken us to the very place where we were training to compete. We found this race in particular extremely inspiring.

Jessica Ennis was the face of the 2012 Olympics. She was on all the advertising campaigns and she was expected to win gold in her event. The pressure on her was immense as the whole world would watch her succeed or fail. Jessica was very graceful in how she approached her events. To watch her win her events despite the attention was inspiring as she had won the heptathlon before her final event. Jessica didn’t celebrate until the very last moment – she competed in her final event which was the 800m as if it counted, as if she had something to prove within herself.

Please watch and experience her motivation and let this motivate you in your own careers.

The Sedan Vault – Streetwalkers

The Director of this music video, Danny Willems, is known for his work with Belgian rockstar Arno, choreographer Wim Vandekeybus and commercial ads.

Dancer Kip Johnson worked with Willems in the dance production, Booty Looting, directed by two time Bessie award winning choreographer Wim Vandekeybus.

This video is not only beautifully shot but it is also beautifully created. We love that the art is not performed in a typical way and shows beauty from abnormality and distortion. This music video was filmed in public and we actually stumbled across the team filming this in London. It was surprising but wonderful to see how the disturbance created a rupture with the ongoing traffic as Kip startled people. This video reminds us as creators that there can be beauty in the chaos and the unexpected.
