A dance of stupefaction, of silenced emotions
What can the body say when words fail?
Following SOMNOLE – a whistled solo balanced on the tip of his lips – Boris Charmatz continues his exploration of breath, silence and movement in Muette.
In this stripped-back solo, the body expresses what words cannot. Charmatz’s face and skin reveal a flow of emotions as he responds to the shocks and uncertainties of the world around him. Unable to speak, he creates a dance held at the edge of breath: fragile, tense and full of feeling.
The mouth and face are at the heart of the work. Charmatz’s body responds to the smallest changes, turning invisible sensations into movement. Muette explores the space between our inner feelings and the world around us. Moments of stillness give way to bursts of movement, as tension builds and releases.
A silent, deeply physical dance that becomes a long moment of reflection in an uncertain world.
‘Muette will be guided by what does not even pass through my lips, what does not come out…In a final dance, after passing through ecstatic prayers, ungodly contemplations, obscene and silent gestures, emotional apneas, I might still dance “without music,” that is, to a music that is absent, yet liberating.’ Boris Charmatz
