Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch Palermo Palermo
Play Trailer+ £4.00 transaction fee
The godmother of European dance theatre tears down polite society – and the walls come crashing down.
A wall falls.
From the rubble and dust emerges 22 performers, as though nothing has happened. They move through the wreckage – running, stumbling, embracing. Somewhere in the city, a party begins. Then something darker takes hold.
Choreographed by legendary dancer Pina Bausch, Palermo Palermo is a stark portrait of a city, but it is also of its people. Nearly 40 years since its 1989 premiere, Bausch builds a world on the brink of collapse in fragments: a sudden movement, a quiet pause, a shocking contradiction.
Without a single plot, vignettes of daily rituals and mundane encounters capture an atmosphere of destruction and the uncertainty that follows.
