The Nelken Line by Pina Bausch

A group of people walks in a line through a green city park with their arms raised, while others relax on the grass in the background. Urban buildings frame the scene.

Enjoy a performance of Pina Bausch’s iconic Nelken Line on Sunday 12 April as part of Elixir Festival.

Line sequences are a recurring characteristic element in many of Pina Bausch’s pieces, and the Nelken Line might be one of Bausch’s most famous. Featured in Nelken (1982), within the section “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter”, the line recounts the change of the seasons, with the dancers moving in a long procession defined by few, concise gestures.

Dance lovers of all ages from around the world have responded to the call and danced their own individual Nelken Line.

On Sunday, Anne Martin will lead an intergenerational line, joined by other members of the cast of Kontakthof – Echoes of ’78, Company of Elders, Elders Fellows, National Youth Dance Company and Get into Dance groups. Anne Martin was in the original cast of Pina Bausch’s Nelken (Carnations) where she was the dancer introducing and demonstrating the line to the audience. The Nelken Line will follow a path from Sadler’s Wells East through the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park before returning to the Sadler’s Wells East Dance Floor.

‘DANCE! The NELKEN Line by Pina Bausch’ is a Pina Bausch Foundation project. Further information on the work and life of Pina Bausch can be found at www.pinabausch.org
