National Youth Dance Company

Sadler's Wells is proud to be the host organisation for the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC). The company aims to create and perform innovative and influential dance, bringing together some of the brightest dance talent from across England to work with our internationally renowned Associate Artists.

We are delighted to welcome Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui as Artistic Director for NYDC 2014-15. Cherkaoui is one of the most prolific choreographers working today; a Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, he has created more than 20 works and is acknowledged as one of Europe’s most exciting choreographers.

Joining NYDC can be a life-changing experience, presenting career possibilities and raising aspirations, self-esteem and confidence, besides introducing the very best of professional dance practice.

NYDC meet in school holidays to participate in four intensive weeks per year at Sadler's Wells and regional venues.

NYDC dancers will:

  • Perform in world class venues
  • Learn, create and perform original work
  • Draw on different dance techniques
  • Take part in intensive residencies over the school holidays; living and working as a company
  • Collaborate with professional choreographers and companies
  • Find out about career pathways and opportunities
  • Take part in dancers toolbox sessions to enhance their learning and prepare them for the future

Each company dancer is an ambassador for NYDC; they return to their home towns across England, taking with them all that they have experienced and learnt to share with their peers and act as catalysts for change.

Throughout summer 2015, NYDC will be touring England performing a new commission by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The work sees Cherkaoui revisiting moments from his established catalogue of work: Babel(words) co-choreographed with Damien Jalet, Puz/zle, Loin and TeZukA, incorporating new ideas and movement material from the young dancers. Cherkaoui’s unique choreographic process combined with the fresh talent of NYDC dancers will illustrate the power and youthful creativity young people can bring to a professional dance collaboration. The work is created in partnership with Eastman. Please see the ‘events page’ for NYDC 2015 Tour Dates.
