Five performers wearing red costumes are captured mid-jump with their arms raised

A celebration of love, solidarity and joy from Rwanda’s next generation of artists.

Dorothée Munyaneza returns to her motherland of Rwanda to showcase the voices of tomorrow. She brings together five young performers under the umuko tree, considered to be the ancestral tree, the healing tree, and the guardian of stories. Together they explore ejo, which translates to ‘yesterday’ and ‘tomorrow’ in the Kinyarwanda language, weaving links between the past, present and future through dance, poetry, music and song.

Gather to hear the vibrant stories of the youth: vulnerable, powerful, rebellious, flamboyant, and as bright as the red vermilion flowers of the umuko.

About the contender

Based in Marseille, Dorothée Munyaneza is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses music, song, text and movement to express her powerful and disruptive creative vision.

Her artistic research draws from the diversity of her cultural heritage – her extended family in Rwanda, the experience of growing up in Kigali and London, her move to Paris followed by her settling in Marseille. She is an associate artist to Chaillot Théâtre National de la danse Paris, Maison de la danse de Lyon, Biennale de la danse de Lyon.

In 2013 Munyaneza formed the Kadidi company in Marseille, which has toured extensively across Europe, Canada, the USA and Brazil. In the coming years, the company aims to support the emergence of younger artists in Rwanda through workshops, creative processes and mentorships.

It’s been 28 years since I moved away from my native land. 28 years that I live in new lands.

28 years that I haven’t forgotten umuko, that tree that illuminates my childhood. That tree that resonates only in the native language. That bright red tree, earth red, which links me to what begins, to what is lost and found again, when I return, to what continues…

More than a show, umuko is above all a ritual, individual and collective
