Two naked dancers lie on their stomachs facing each other

A dance of self-defence and the power of creative resistance

Two dancers, both naked apart from socks and trainers, move in unison. Between moments of stillness, sudden movements synchronise with the sound of their stomping feet – the rhythmic heartbeat that underscores the defiant performance.

In 2018, Davi Pontes & Wallace Ferreira came together to create a trilogy of choreographies of self-defence in the face of physical, imaginary, and systemic violence. Repertório N.3 is the final piece of this trilogy and premiered in December 2023 at the 35th Bienal de São Paulo.

Drawing on postcolonial, gender and race studies, with references to martial arts, they seek to establish new ways of representing experiences of violence against oppressed groups.

The work attempts to understand how the body develops the capacity to defend itself, and asks the question, how can we perform violence without condoning it?

About the contender

Davi Pontes is an artist, choreographer, and research-oriented practitioner with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the Arts from Universidade Federal Fluminense and additional studies at ESMAE (Portugal). Since 2016, he has presented works at major institutions and festivals in the United States, Europe, and Brazil, and has held residencies at ImPulsTanz [8:tension], La Becque, and MAM Rio, among others. Pontes received the ImPulsTanz Young Choreographers Award, the Artlink 100 Award, a grant from the Fundación Ama Amoedo (2024–25), and was awarded the Prince Claus Seed Award (2025)

Wallace Ferreira is a choreographer, performer, and visual artist. With a degree in dance from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Parque Lage, and a residency at the Inclusartiz Institute, she received the ImPulsTanz Award for Young Choreographers (2022) and the FOCO ARTRIO Award (2024), and was named Artist in Focus at MITbr2025. Her work consists of studies of social codes choreographed by dissident bodies. Since 2018, she has performed at prestigious galleries and festivals across Europe and the Americas.

If the Black body at rest is suspicious and when in movement a threat, Pontes and Ferreira find within this choreographic act possible strategies to re-elaborate imaginaries, proposing changes in the symbolic meanings of the Black presence in a world that is not yet able to grant these lives existence and dignity.
